City and State of Colima

Colima State is the third smallest of Mexico's 32 states and is located in the central-western part of the Mexican Republic, on the southern coast of the Pacific Ocean, with a latitude of about 19° 31´ and a longitude of 103° 29´. November is in the dry season for Mexico so cloudless skies can virtually be guaranteed with perfect views of the majestic Volcán de Colima 32 km to the north of the City of Colima.

The state has a total area of 5,543 km2 and a population of approximately 600,000 inhabitants distributed in ten municipalities, five of these are influenced directly by the volcano. To the northeast, the northwest and the west of its borders lies the State of Jalisco; to the east the State of Michoacán; and the south and southwest it limits are the Pacific Ocean. It has excellent aerial, terrestrial and marine communication with two airports: one near the capital City of Colima and the other near the Port of Manzanillo, which is international. There is an excellent ground communication with the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco, and from there to all major cities in México. Needless to say, the bus transportation service from the cities of Guadalajara and Mexico City, where the closest major international airports to Colima are located, is excellent. Colima has an excellent road network which includes a good connection with other cities such as Guadalajara, and the port of Manzanillo.

The city of Colima is the capital of the state. It is a non-industrial city which concentrates on services, it includes good infrastructure for the visitor. Half the state’s population is located in Colima and its neighbouring city, Villa de Álvarez.
